Tips and Viewing Notes

Soon (that's relative depending on the speed of your Internet connection) after clicking the link the slideshow should start playing. While playing it will continue to load the remainder of the slideshow.
There is sound with the slideshow and if you don't hear it check the volume on the speakers or see if they are turned on. Also try the player in full screen (F11 in Firefox), or 'View/full screen' if it looks blocky.
The slideshow looks best in a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. Most of the pictures are visible in 800x600 but the player controls are not.
Also, if your system opens Quicktime movies (.mov extensions) in Windows Media Player try to download the file, then start Quicktime seperately and load the movie into Quicktime that way.

Download times will vary - here are some approximations:

• at 56k ( dial-up ) - about 8 minutes, 30 seconds
• at 128k ( ADSL ) - about 3 minutes, 45 seconds
• at 600k ( cable or DSL ) - about 45 seconds

You can continue doing other work while the download is in action. You can also right-click on the link and select '~ save link as' in most browsers to save a local copy of the movie that can be viewed later or off-line.

August 17, 2004

Completed first draft of the slideshow. The slideshow was created by making a Powerpoint presentation, then exporting the presentation as a series of graphic files, then importing those graphic files to Quicktime Pro, jerry-rigging some timings, and adding the soundtrack. This specific approach was inspired and informed by information found at the University of Rhode Island. Previous to talks with my brother Bill helped germinate the idea.

• added style sheet. Passed html validation tests and CSS validation tests
• Bill had the first reported successful external viewing (outside my test group of Michelle and (Portland) Tom), from Father's.

reworked tips page and added instructions for saving a local copy. The last couple steps are a little off but it meets the 80% rule for now.

September 12, 2004

On Sep 2 received over 100 photos (on USB key) from Bill that he, Erick, and Donna scanned in at RWF over Labor Day weekend. Created web galleries for each of the areas that Bill had the pictures in (this organizational breakdown from Bill was very helpful) using Photoshop Elements and moved them up to the website tonight. Thanks Erick and Michelle for the helpful comments on the captions and the movie.

September 19, 2004

• Did a full backup of the site
• Tweaked the movie a little. Added in a few more images (Mother and Father's wedding and Mother with the grandchildren), cleaned up the fonts so look less jagged in the slideshow movie, added a photo of Mother to the closing.
• Added a beautiful sunset photo, which Mother took in 1998 from the driveway, to the closing
• Added a sections to the photos of recipes and other images (this needs to get worked into Bill's existing structure at a later time).
• Good news - While wrapping up I found out how to let the pictures how up as normal size while creating the photo galleries from Photoshop Elements. So, I took a few minutes to rework all the galleries so they have the thumbnails with 'normal' size photos. Its later now but I'm glad I figured this out and closed this loop.
